NAIDOC Week celebrations in Hyde Park

The City of Vincent’s free NAIDOC Festival is coming to Hyde Park on Monday 9 July from 1.30pm until 4.00pm.

“The theme of NAIDOC Week this year is Because of her, we can! This celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women pays huge respect to the incredible contribution that women make to their communities, their culture and to our country,” said Mayor Cole.

“The Vincent NAIDOC festival puts Aboriginal women front and centre of our celebrations. The wonderful Gina Williams will be singing, we have Elder May McGuire providing the Welcome to Country, and artists Karla Hart, Bec Garlett and Acacia Collard providing free workshops and activities for all ages to enjoy.”

“Gina Williams is a celebrated artist who crafts contemporary songs in Noongar language. Her songs are beautiful and deeply moving. To listen to Gina sing in Hyde Park is an experience not to be missed,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

The NAIDOC Festival in Hyde Park will take place the first Monday of the school holidays and is a kid friendly event with music, dancing, community art, workshops, bush tucker and more.

“NAIDOC Week is a really important way for our community to learn, connect, enjoy and celebrate Aboriginal culture together,’’ said Mayor Cole.

“As part of our 'Reflect' Reconciliation Action Plan, we are building strong and meaningful relationships with our local Noongar community and organisations. At the NAIDOC festival we’re beginning the conversation on our next Reconciliation Action Plan and I encourage everyone to celebrate and share your thoughts with us.”

As well as the NAIDOC festival in Hyde Park, the City of Vincent are running NAIDOC themed events in their library with a Noongar story time and Aboriginal art workshops for adults and kids. Visit our events page or call 9273 6000 for more information.
