Because of her, we can!

NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year's NAIDOC Week theme 'Because of her, we can!' focuses on the important role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women play at the community, local, state and national levels. This year, the City of Vincent are holding a series of free community events, highlighted by the NAIDOC festival at Hyde Park.

Celebrate NAIDOC Week at Hyde Park with a massive line-up of entertainment and activities, featuring:

  • Welcome to Country with Elder May McGuire
  • Smoking Ceremony with Vaughn McGuire
  • Live music by Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse
  • Interactive Noongar dance performance with Baldja Moort
  • Headband workshop with Karla Hart
  • Shoe and canvas painting with Jarred Franey
  • Sand Mural by Acacia Collard
  • Sand Yarning with Bec Garlett
  • Urban Indigenous Community Canvas
  • Reconciliation Community Consultation with Danny Ford
  • Food from Kuditj Cafe & Veggie Mama

Noongar Story Time with Bec Garlett

Date: Tuesday 10 July

Time: 10.00am - 11.00am

Location: City of Vincent Library

Cost: Free

Bookings are essential and can be made through Eventbrite.

Bec Garlett from Warlitj Productions will share stories of Noongar culture, tradition and language for children aged between 5 and 12 at the Vincent Library. Parents and guardians are encouraged to join and stay for the session.

Aboriginal Art Workshop with Jade Dolman: All Ages

Date: Wednesday 11 July

Time: 10.00am - 12.00pm

Location: City of Vincent Library

Cost: Free

Bookings are essential and can be made through Eventbrite.

Jade Dolman (J.D. Penangke) will facilitate an all ages aboriginal art workshop at the Vincent Library. Jade will explore the meaning of colours and symbols in aboriginal art as well as share stories of Noongar culture and language. Participants will have the opportunity to create a piece of art to take home. Catering is included and will be supplied by Bushfood Experience.

Aboriginal Art Workshop with Jade Dolman: Juniors 5+

Date: Friday 13 July

Time: 10.00am - 11.00am

Location: City of Vincent Library

Cost: Free

Jade will explore the meaning of colours and symbols in aboriginal art as well as share stories of Noongar culture and language. Participants will have the opportunity to create a piece of art to take home. Catering is included and will be supplied by Bushfood Experience.
