Compost Awareness Week

May 6-12 is International Compost Awareness Week, a time to celebrate nature's circular economy.

Did you know that almost 45% of an average household bin is food and garden waste? Composting is nature's circular economy, where food waste is reduced and reused and its nutrients recycled into fertiliser. By returning these back to the soil, rather than letting organic waste rot away in landfills, we can feed diverse life in the soil. The bacteria, fungi, insects and worms in compost support healthy plant growth, which will help offset greenhouse gas emissions.

Last week, the City of Vincent held a composting workshop at Highgate Primary School, teaching everything you need to know about home composting, Bokashi Bins and worm farming. This was the first of several free workshops that will be run throughout the year. Stay tuned to find out when the next workshop will be held. Photos from last week's workshop can be found by clicking the image at the bottom.

City of Vincent residents have the opportunity to purchase a range of composting and worm farming equipment at a subsidised rate. Come and check out our composting and worm farming display, currently set up in the foyer at Beatty Park Leisure Centre.
