The City of Vincent's Policy and Place team were recently nominated in the Planning Institute of Australia's (PIA) 2018 WA Awards for Planning Excellence. The annual awards acknowledge excellence in leading practice, leadership and achievement in planning and the planning profession.
We are proud to announce our Place Managers received a commendation for the Public Engagement and Community Planning Award, for the Vincent Town Centre Place Plans. The award recognises initiatives in best practice public engagement or community planning that achieve an outstanding and innovative contribution to enhance built form, planning processes and social outcomes.
"We are so proud of the team for this fantastic achievement. It's great to receive this recognition for a community focussed approach to place based planning,” said Mayor Emma Cole.
The Place Plans are a set of ‘place based’ strategic documents to guide the direction of funding and resources in the City’s town centres. The documents guide the implementation of all major initiatives in the town centres and are informed by the respective town team Action Plans. The Place Managers are charged with collaboratively delivering Place Plans for each of the City’s town centres in consultation with the local town teams.
The City of Vincent was able to evolve the community capacity building model first initiated by the Beaufort Street Network and harness/replicate through the creation of ‘place teams’ comprised of passionate residents, business operators and land owners to drive town centre enhancements, events and initiatives from the ground up, ensuring a strategic approach to place-making, which is proactive, inclusive and responsive.
The judges felt that Vincent’s place management approach is innovative, enabling collegiality and integrated decision making, and providing an exceptional level of integration across all relevant stakeholders to create vibrant, interesting and economically successful town centres with a focus on people first outcomes.
