Vincent commits to a sustainable Christmas

The City of Vincent has committed to be more sustainable this Christmas, with a number of events and initiatives to help encourage sustainable options for the festive season.

Breaking from tradition, the City of Vincent has installed two eco Christmas tree sculptures this year, created by local artists using recycled or reused materials. Artist Sioux Tempestt’s creation, made out of plastic toys donated by the Vincent community, is on show at North Perth Common, while the arts team from REmida Perth have created their tree out of donated items including Turkish soap tins and old shopping centre Christmas decorations.

City of Vincent Mayor, Emma Cole said the City has set a vision to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2028 and the Christmas period was the perfect time to promote sustainability and ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.

“Christmas is a time of giving and sharing and this is about introducing some sustainable ideas into how we celebrate. We wanted to look for some simple ways that can inspire our community to reduce, reuse and recycle at this time of year,” Mayor Cole said.

“As well as our eco Christmas trees, we are supporting a sustainable eco-wrapping station at the Mezz in Mount Hawthorn. From 20 -24 December between 11am and 1pm you can learn how to re-use household items to turn them into wrapping paper."

"We are also running a decluttering workshop on 17 December, from 10am at the Library and Local History Centre. To give tips to live with less stuff and find a new home for the things you no longer need.”

“Another simple way that people can support sustainability this season is by shopping locally. Walking or riding to your nearest high street can reduce your carbon footprint, is a much more relaxed Christmas shopping experience and, so importantly, it supports our local businesses who offer unique, high quality gifts and services.”

The City of Vincent is running a Shop Local campaign this December to encourage residents to support the businesses in their community, with prizes to be won for supporting Vincent retailers. Keep an eye out on our channels with more details to be announced soon.
