The City of Vincent has released plans for the design of North Perth Common - the new heart of the North Perth town centre and the latest and greatest addition to the Vincent community’s already growing portfolio of vibrant and attractive places for people!

The concept designs for North Perth Common, a new public shared space planned for the corner of View Street and Fitzgerald Street in North Perth, will be considered at tonight’s Council Briefing and will be voted on by Council next Tuesday.

North Perth Common is the City of Vincent's flagship open space project with a $750,000 budget and supported by the WA State Government with a $250,000 contribution to the total project cost.

“The iconic design for North Perth Common has been two years in the making and has involved extensive consultation to get to this point,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“Throughout the community consultation we identified that people wanted a shaded place to sit and meet, host events, be inspired by public art, be lit up at night and be focussed on people not cars. The concept design delivers all of this and more.”

The main features of the North Perth Common Concept Design include;

  • An exciting suspended lighting art installation with a circular design that is interactive and responsive to people moving through the space below.
  • Plenty of shade and green space with an additional 14 trees.
  • A pedestrian friendly shared space that can be adapted for community events and markets.

“North Perth Common is unique in that a public art piece was central to the development of the design from the very beginning. The circular lighting installation provides light to the area after dark, it invites people into the space and creates a cohesive whole with the circles carried throughout the design. It will also include a projector which will be used to ‘cast’ artworks on the street,” said Mayor Cole.

“Our community told us they wanted more shade and less space for cars and parking. Whilst cars will continue to use the space, it will be much more pedestrian and bike friendly and a slower speed environment. The finished design should deliver an additional 370 square metres of tree canopy coverage for the area once the planted trees are mature. It is a very green space that is flexible and able to be adapted for a variety of community uses.”

The concept design is the product of all of the feedback gathered from the North Perth community during consultation and a collaborative workshop process with the North Perth Common Working Group. The group includes Mayor Cole, Cr Josh Topelberg, Local Member for Perth, John Carey, Ida Smithwick & Andrew Ryan, Chair and Vice Chair of the North Perth Common Local Town Team and Munira Mackay member from the City’s Design Review Panel.

The concept design will be considered for adoption by Council next week and will then proceed to detailed design and tender for the construction of North Perth Common. Construction will commence and be completed in the 2018/19 financial year.

“The vision for North Perth Common is to create a safe, fun, iconic and inviting space for the people of North Perth to call their own. The design is different, inspiring and directly responds to what the community told us they wanted in the space,” said Mayor Cole.

North Perth Common will build on the success of other award-winning public places delivered by the City in partnership with the community in recent years, including Mary Street Piazza, Braithwaite Park Naturescape, and Oxford Reserve.
