Planning Vincent’s Future: Local Planning Scheme No.2

The City of Vincent’s long-awaited Local Planning Scheme No. 2 will come into effect from 16 May 2018, it is a new and modern scheme that sets the framework for future development in Vincent.

“The scheme strikes the right balance by protecting our residential neighbourhoods and leafy streets and parks, while encouraging sensitive, higher density development in our town centres and along major roads,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

When the draft scheme was put forward for public comment in 2014 it generated a great deal of public feedback, with over 300 submissions from community members and interested parties.

“Our community expressed a strong desire to maintain the unique and highly valued fabric of our established residential areas, and this has been achieved through maintaining lower residential densities in these areas,” she said.

“Our town centres and main roads will provide opportunities for urban infill, and to meet density targets set by the State Government, with the benefit of more vibrancy and activity in these important local economic centres.”

The scheme encourages development close to public transport to create transit hubs, so it’s easy for residents to get around and has the added benefit of making the community more sustainable.

The new scheme is also considered a win for the future of Claisebrook.

“We will see Claisebrook shine brighter, with an incredible future ahead as a transit oriented, inner city hub for both residents and businesses,” said Mayor Cole.

“It paves the way for the removal of the two concrete batching plants which we have always believed to be incompatible with the area and provides as many new housing opportunities as you’d find in a newly developed outer suburb estate.”
The scheme is the culmination of over 10 years work on behalf of the City of Vincent and the State Government.

“It has always been important that our scheme reflects our community’s expectations for Vincent and, ultimately, the final decision of the State Government has been respectful and supportive of this vision,” she said.
