Mindarie Regional Council 'Face Your Waste' Launch

Published on Tuesday, 24 April 2018 at 3:00:00 PM

Could you face your waste? The Mindarie Regional Council will be trialling see-through rubbish bins as part of their new 'Face Your Waste' campaign and we need Vincent volunteers. The transparent bins are designed to draw attention to the high levels of waste we produce and throw away each week.

Australians send over 20 million tonnes of waste to landfill every year, making us one of the most wasteful nations on Earth. Mindarie Regional Council is WA's largest waste management authority, collecting over 250,000 tonnes of waste each year from Perth's northern suburbs. With the Tamala Park landfill site predicted to reach capacity by 2028, we not only need to recycle more but we need to minimise our waste.

For the most part, dealing with waste is easy - we put it in our bins, where it remains hidden until our local council takes it away. Once our waste is out of sight, it is easy to keep it out of mind. Face Your Waste attempts to confront us with the amount of waste we produce by making it visible to everyone in the community. The aim of the campaign is to get people thinking about where our waste goes beyond the rubbish bin and to encourage a culture of waste minimisation.

Mayor Emma Cole attended the Mindarie Regional Council's Face Your Waste campaign launch yesterday. The MRC will be installing 20 Face Your Waste Bins for an eight week period throughout participating Perth suburbs.

The City of Vincent will be trialling some of the clear bins over May and June this year. If you are interested in volunteering to be a Face Your Waste Bin Ambassador, please email us at waste.enquiry@vincent.wa.gov.au
