We are proud to announce that the City of Vincent's entry for Leedy Streets Open has won the award for Community Based Initiative of the Year at the 2018 PLA WA Awards of Excellence.

The Parks and Leisure Australia Awards of Excellence showcase the excellent work of the parks and leisure professionals who deliver enormous benefit to our communities and recognise the outstanding performance by both organisations and individuals contributing to the sector. Regional winners of the awards progress to the National Finals held at the MCG in October.

The Community Based Initiative of the Year Award is designed to recognise the combined effort that is required to successfully plan, organise and manage effective initiatives, programmes, events and/or festivals which promote and enhance leisure time for a number of social, environmental and economic benefits to the community.

Leedy Streets Open - No Cars, Open for Business

Our winning entry for the Community Based Initiative of the Year was Leedy Streets Open.

"During Leedy Streets Open, we closed down the Leederville town centre to cars and worked with businesses and the local town team to spill onto the streets and take over the town centre. The project demonstrated the possibility of a town centre free of cars and open for business," said Mayor Emma Cole.

"Our community really embraced the Leedy Open Streets. The car-free atmosphere paved the way for some fantastic events in Leederville over four summer weekends," said Mayor Cole.

"Thank you so much to Leederville Connect and the amazing Leederville traders for making this happen with us. City of Vincent closed the streets, you filled them with fun!"

Thank you to Parks & Leisure Australia for the award, Leederville Connect for their LeedyPalooza events and the people and businesses of Leederville for making Leedy Streets Open a reality.
