Multiculturalism in Vincent

People from all over the world call the City of Vincent home and the many cultures represented make our community a more vibrant and enjoyable place. The predominant culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) groups in the City of Vincent are Italian, Vietnamese, Chinese (including Mandarin and Cantonese), Spanish and Greek.

The City of Vincent 2016 Census data demonstrates the importance of considering this important population group:

  • 11,636 were born overseas (31 per cent)
  • 21.7 per cent of people speak a language other than English at home
  • 49.7 per cent of residents’ parents were born overseas

Multicultural Vincent

Some of the multicultural highlights in the City include the (unofficial) ‘Chinatown’ on William Street, the Vietnamese Monument of Gratitude, Chanh Giac Temple, Multicultural Gardens and the historic Perth Mosque.

The Office of Multicultural Interests ‘Discover Multicultural Perth: Northbridge Trail’ is a great way to visit some of these sites and learn more about their significance. 

Our Local History Centre also has a wealth of information about early migration and the history of multiculturalism in Vincent.

Refugee Welcome Zone

The City is a Refugee Welcome Zone, registered with the Refugee Council of Australia. Being a Refugee Welcome Zone means that the City has committed to:

  • Welcoming refugees into the community;
  • Upholding the human rights of refugees;
  • Demonstrating compassion for refugees; and
  • Enhancing cultural and religious diversity in the community.
