Close to Home by Olive Cheng

Monday 18th March 2024 to Friday 26th July 2024

Close to Home is a collection of portraits of the City of Vincent by local artist Olive Cheng. Olive is known for her botanical wood burnings and public murals.

Close to Home captures a range of Vincent's beautiful and iconic buildings that are close to Olive's heart. The collection of over 20 wood-burnt portraits of the sites within the City of Vincent is a personal celebration of the places that are dear to her, and the overall narrative weaving the pieces together is the story of her very happy wedding day which was all within the City of Vincent.

Close to Home explores place and memory through the form of buildings, but also the essence of cherished memories and botanical characters that frame our experiences of place, much like details within our memories themselves.

Olive Cheng trained as a landscape architect and later as a primary school teacher. She loves crafting bespoke wood burnings and painting public murals (many can be spotted around Vincent!). Olive also enjoys running artist workshops with children in schools and the wider community.

Each portrait in the collection has been created by the technique of pyrography or 'wood burning'. The artist combined a range of media on wood to create the pieces.

This event is part of the National Trust's Heritage Festival 2024.
