Local youth service providers are now more equipped with knowledge around vaping thanks to an informative session run by the City of Vincent and The Behaviour Change Collaborative.
The Public Health team have been delivering educational sessions and raising awareness to promote its Fresh Air – You’re Welcome: the Smoke-Free Town Centres project over the past year.
The project was launched in November 2022 as an initiative of Vincent's Public Health Plan.
As part of the project, parts of Mt Hawthorn, North Perth, Leederville, William Street and Beaufort Street are now smoke-free.
In August, representatives from local youth services gathered at The Y HQ in Leederville for a session aimed at building capacity in the sector around the topic of young people and vaping.
Vincent engaged The Behaviour Change Collaborative to deliver a presentation relating to their research called Being Gen Vape, which involved a deep dive into teenagers and vaping.
The Collaborative discussed its exploratory research on the knowledge, perceptions, attitudes and influences on teen vaping in Western Australia.
Sixteen participants from six different organisations, who work either directly or indirectly with young people aged 12-25 attended the session.
The participants also discussed how the information can be applied in youth service settings.
A participant, who coordinated a service aimed at connecting with marginalised young people, said they would incorporate what they learnt when talking with young people about the risks of vaping and support services available.
A youth worker at Foyer Oxford, a youth housing service on Oxford Street in Leederville, said they would be able to better inform young people of current trends as well as known risks of vaping.
Whilst as of 1 July Vincent can enforce smoke-free town centres, the project’s focus continues to follow an education-first approach that prioritises awareness and cooperation.
