Vincent to help environmental projects grow

The City of Vincent is encouraging environmentally minded community groups and local schools to apply for grant funding.

The environmental grants program provides funding support for schools and community groups to undertake environmental projects within Vincent.

Projects must align with at least one of the objectives of Vincent’s Sustainable Environment Strategy 2019-2024.

Some key objectives of the strategy include empowering and supporting the community to live in an environmentally sustainable manner, reducing the use of non-renewable energy, efficient water management, establishing floral and faunal biodiversity and reducing waste.

Applications for the grant program close on 12 April.

“Since 2015, our environmental grants program has helped bring various initiatives to life including a food forest, a worm farm, community gardens and recycling activities,” said Mayor Alison Xamon.

“It is projects like these that all add up to help tackle the ongoing impacts of climate change and the threats to our biodiversity in our neighbourhoods.

“I encourage our community to put forward innovative and sustainable ideas that will help make Vincent a more environmentally friendly place to live, work and play.”

Repair Cafe Perth, which was the first of its kind in WA, received a $2000 environmental grant last year towards running their sessions on every third Saturday of each month at the North Perth Town Hall.

“We really appreciate receiving the environmental grant from the City of Vincent because our only other source of income is donations from our patrons,” said treasurer Liz Millward.

“We use the grant to pay for insurance, website charges, repair supplies and maintenance and venue hire.

“We encourage other organisations to apply for these grants as they are an important way to encourage and help with care of the environment.”

Ms Millward said they aim to continue to attract first time visitors and welcome regular patrons each month.

“We hope to continue repairing and mending for the foreseeable future,” she said.

Applications close at 5pm on 12 April.
