Vincent supports proposed Stirling Towers development

The City of Vincent has welcomed the State Government’s plans to redevelop the derelict Stirling Towers site in Highgate into affordable, social housing.

In December 2023, the State Government appointed Community Housing Ltd (CHL) and Tetris Capital as the consortium to demolish the former Stirling Towers complex and prepare the site for redevelopment.

Named as the Smith Street Build-to-Rent project, it will be the first of its kind in WA.

A mix of social, affordable and specialist disability rental apartments will be included in the project.

This is part of the State’s Build-to-Rent model, which aims to develop new urban communities close to major transport hubs and local amenities.

Stage one of the project includes the demolition of the existing buildings. The development application for this is yet to be lodged to the City of Vincent.

Stage two involves the construction of the site, which will be funded by the State Government’s Social Housing Investment Fund and Federal Government's Social Housing Accelerator Fund.

“I am pleased to see the vacant site finally being redeveloped into affordable rental apartments,” said Mayor Alison Xamon.

“It has been very unfortunate that since the site was cleared out, it has become a hub of anti-social behaviour and vandalism which has caused distress among locals.

“I am encouraging the State Government, and the Department of Communities who are responsible for the redevelopment, to ensure that there are a large number of apartments tailored for people with physical disability.

“People with physical disability, who may have limited mobility or not have a car, often need to live centrally so they can easily access services in the CBD.

“This site is just minutes away from the city, has good public transport options and is ideal for high density.”

Ms Xamon said Vincent was committed to ensuring its areas were accessible as possible.

“We look forward to continue to work with the Department of Communities to ensure we get the best outcomes for people with a disability in Vincent,” she said.
