Long Term Cycle Network gets the tick

The City of Vincent has endorsed the Department of Transport’s Long Term Cycle Network (LTCN) after changes were made to the aspirational plan to reflect the views of our community.

The LTCN details the Department’s vision for a continuous bike network that links parks, schools, community facilities and transport services across the Perth and Peel regions.

It initially included a route through Hyde Park, but this was replaced with a path that takes cyclists along quiet streets to the west of the park after the City advocated for the change.

Vincent residents were consulted on the LTCN through a survey and community forum before the plan was updated and endorsed.

“The Vincent community was widely supportive of the LTCN, with 85.7% of respondents strongly supporting or somewhat supporting the proposed plan,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“The vision behind the Department of Transport’s LTCN is to make bike riding more convenient and encourage people of all ages and abilities to cycle, and that is also something we really value and have prioritised in our inner-city neighbourhoods.

“I want to again thank Transport Minister Rita Saffioti MLA for agreeing to extend the deadline for final comment so we could properly consult our community on the LTCN.

“Because of this we were able to make sure key changes that were really important to our community members were incorporated into the updated plan – like removing any bike path through Hyde Park.”

The Department has agreed to match the City’s funding for a concept design for the route to the west of Hyde Park.

The State Government will use the routes identified in the LTCN to allocate funding for cycling infrastructure to local governments, but the City isn’t obliged to build every route in the plan.

The City can work with the Department to modify the endorsed plan in the future.

There will be more comprehensive consultation on cycling in Vincent and the LTCN next year when Vincent’s own Bike Network Plan is updated.
