Litis Stadium underpass to be removed

The City of Vincent is removing the Litis Stadium underpass to create a better connection between the stadium and Britannia Reserve for local residents and sporting clubs.

The underpass was built for the 1962 Commonwealth Games as part of the former Lake Monger Velodrome.

The former velodrome was transformed into a football stadium and the home of Floreat Athena Football Club in the 1980s.

The underpass, which is built below normal ground level, has come to the end of its life and is now filled with water posing a health and safety risk. It has been closed for seven years however, it still is a health concern with the breeding of mosquitos and algae in the trapped water.

Vincent will be removing the underpass in August 2023.

Once the underpass is removed, it will be filled in to ground level and a new footpath will be installed, connecting the reserve. Surrounding existing soil will be reshaped to open up the hill bank.

There is a large mature tree (Corymbia citriodora) located directly above the redundant underpass. This tree will need to be removed for the works to be completed, otherwise it will become unsafe.

The tree is scheduled to be removed in August, with the wood from the tree to be repurposed for future projects in the Reserve.

Following the tree removal, the underpass will be demolished across two days.

During this time, there will be minimal disruption to sporting clubs and park users.

Once earthworks are complete, the area will be landscaped with around 17 WA native trees and eco-zoned with low-growing native plants and mulch.

After the works are complete, local sporting clubs and residents will be able to smoothly walk across through the reserve and stadium and enjoy native greenery in the area.

Sporting teams including Floreat Athena’s juniors, who train at Britannia Reserve, will have easy access to the stadium and the new multi-sports changeroom facility.
