Green light for 40km/h speed limit on all local access roads

Speed limits will drop to 40km/h on all local access roads in the City of Vincent.

Earlier this year, Main Roads WA (MRWA) approved permanent 40km/h speed limits in parts of North Perth, in addition to an existing trial area in Vincent’s southern-most suburbs. This covered 40 per cent of City of Vincent’s local access roads.

Community consultations by City of Vincent demonstrated significant support for the reduction of the speed limits, with almost 60 per cent of respondents showing they were in favour of the change.

In support of this, MRWA has now given approval for the speed to be permanently reduced on all local access roads within the City of Vincent.

The 40km/h speed limits will apply to local access roads only. Distributor roads and main corridors will not be affected.

Reducing speed limits to 40km/h is a key objective of Vincent’s Accessible City Strategy, which was adopted in May 2021.

“Over many years, our inner-city community has been asking us to slow down speeds and reduce rat running in our residential neighbourhoods. I have consistently been told that 50km/h on our local streets just feels too fast,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“We are excited that we have the green light to drop the speed limit to 40km/h across all our local access roads in our residential neighbourhoods.

“This change will make it safer for our kids to walk and cycle to school or their local park and our streets will feel more comfortable. We know, from our trial, that slower speeds encourage more walking and cycling for short trips.

“This initiative helps us reach our goal to make it safe, easy, environmentally friendly and enjoyable to get around Vincent.

“We’re happy to say we can now move ahead with 40km/h across Vincent for our residents and I would like to thank MRWA, Transport Minister Hon. Rita Saffioti and State Member for Perth, Hon. John Carey for helping us to reach this goal.”

Main Roads WA will commence implementation of the 40km/h speed limits before the end of 2023 and expects to complete this work by mid-2024.

The speed limit on each local access road will officially become 40km/h once the regulatory speed limit signs are in place.
