Enforcement to start in smoke-free areas

From 1 July 2023, the City of Vincent will enforce the smoke-free town centres to improve the wellbeing of its residents and visitors.

Vincent launched its Fresh Air - You're Welcome: the Smoke-Free Town Centres project in November 2022 as part of our Public Health Plan.

This project aims to reduce community exposure to second hand cigarette and e-cigarette smoke and create healthy environments, free from smoking and vaping in entertainment precincts.

The enforcement process follows an education-first approach, prioritising awareness and cooperation.

Between January and June 2023, the City of Vincent delivered campaigns to promote the benefits of a smoke-free town centre and raise awareness of the dangers of smoking and vaping.

From July 2023, the Local Government Property Local Law 2021 enables enforcement officers to issue penalties if an individual smokes in a smoke-free area

These smoke-free areas are clearly signposted, indicating that smoking and vaping are prohibited. Permanent signage will be installed throughout July 2023.

Enforcement officers will inform individuals who are found smoking or vaping in smoke-free areas about the new regulations.

They will direct these individuals to either move outside the smoke-free boundary or immediately cease smoking or vaping.

This initial approach provides an opportunity for compliance without incurring any penalties.

Penalties range from $100 to $200.

Vincent is actively engaging with services that support street-present individuals and vulnerable groups, ensuring a compassionate approach.
