In its ongoing partnership with the City of Vincent, the Revelation Perth International Film Festival proudly unveils three new projects set to put the City’s beating heart front and centre on the big screen.
The only project of its kind in Australia, the City of Vincent Film Project offers a substantial grant of $8000 (consisting of $7000 cash and $1000 in-kind from Perth’s premier camera equipment rental company Raz Rentals) to filmmakers to produce a non-fiction short of 10-minutes or less.
A platform for storytelling innovation, fostering a cinematic journey that captures the essence of the City’s vibrant spirit, the project celebrates the unique personalities in the City of Vincent, spotlighting personal and historical stories as well as affording opportunities to emerging creative filmmaking talents.
Recent projects have followed a group of seniors rediscovering the joys of dancing in their golden years, explored the process and lengths to which queer people must go to in order to create a nuclear family, delved into the housing crisis and its impact on young people trying to survive and celebrated local landmarks and cultural institutions including ANZAC Cottage and the Re Store.
City of Vincent Mayor Alison Xamon said the project provided an opportunity for budding filmmakers to create and showcase their short films at Luna Cinemas Leederville.
"We are proud to continue to offer an avenue for talented filmmakers to bring a story about Vincent to life,” she said.
“Now in its seventh year, the project has gone from strength to strength. I am looking forward to watching the winners’ films during the Revelation Perth International Film Festival."
"In directing the Revelation Film Festival, it’s extremely difficult to identify which baby I love the most, but if I had to, I’d say the City of Vincent Film Project is a keeper!" said Revelation Director Richard Sowada.
"I can’t put into words the satisfaction we all get from being so closely involved in the life of these filmmakers and their films, and for many of them over the years it’s been their launch pad into the professional sector. For 2023, we had a record number of submissions so coming down to this final selection was very tough - but gee they’re good.”
The 2024 City of Vincent Film Project titles are as follows:
Aurelio Costarella (working title)
The film explores Aurelio Costarella’s life, spotlighting the triumphs of his fashion label, his mental health journey, and the impact of art therapy against the backdrop of a lifetime rooted in the City of Vincent.
Directed by Chantel Concei and produced by Kate Downie.
Luna, Starring
A behind the scenes exploration of the inner workings of Luna Palace Cinemas as we shadow staff during a pivotal week before a major event. Unveil the no-nonsense charm and commitment of the enigmatic publicist, Tony Bective, and witness the human faces behind this beloved institution; their commitment to storytelling, cinema and community. The film offers a poignant reflection on the resilience of third spaces in the face of a rapidly changing entertainment and social landscape.

Steel Coping
Caught in the chaos of a fractured family and troubled upbringing, aimless teenagers discover a lifeline in skateboarding. It’s more than a pastime – it’s a community that embraces them, offering both acceptance and a pathway to dreams in the face of adversity.

The films will be screened at a special gala during the annual Revelation Perth International Film Festival at Luna Cinemas Leederville, 3 – 7 July, 2024.
