Approved by Council on Tuesday night, the Britannia North West Reserve Development Plan includes a proposal to demolish the structurally unsound Litis grandstand and adjacent toilet block to make way for new fit-for-purpose changerooms and universal accessible toilets.
A $3million pledge from the Australian Federal Government to Floreat Athena Football Club (FAFC) will enable the City carry out the much needed upgrades which includes a makeover to the original 1968 built clubroom.
Following feedback from the community consultation, the City of Vincent will not remove a whole section of the bund on the south east side of the Stadium but will create two pedestrian gateways to provide greater access, connectivity and visibility to the Stadium and the brand new facilities.
The City will also look at the inclusion of a traffic calming median strip adjacent to Britannia Reserve to provide a safe crossing for people entering the recreational area.
Mayor Emma Cole said Council’s restrained approach to the bund would save mature trees and provide a welcoming place for residents to spectate, walk and play.
“We have many senior residents who love to get out about and walk their dog around Britannia and they shouldn’t have to climb the hill to get into Litis Stadium,’’ she said.
“The two access points, one 16 metres and one 14 metres wide, will create an important connection to the new changerooms and upgraded clubroom, which is of great benefit to Floreat Athena Football Club when using Britannia Reserve for training and games.
“The two pedestrian gateways will also invite the broader community in to Litis Stadium to make the most of the green space when the oval is not being used for soccer or other sports, and to access new BBQ picnic areas and the new toilet facilities.”
Mayor Cole said with a number of ageing facilities in Vincent, the $3M pledge of support from the Federal Government was a massive win.
“The in-principle funding from the Federal Government is a huge investment for community sport in Vincent and we are so grateful,’’ she said.
“It will allow our local teams, from young children through to seasoned adults, to play and train in the best conditions and I’m looking forward to seeing players, supporters and the wider community access and enjoy better facilities.
“We have always supported the need to upgrade the facilities at Litis Stadium and have worked closely with FAFC to ensure these improvements benefit the Club and the community.
“Vincent needs to make the most of every sporting facility and green space we have, so it will be fantastic to see gridiron teams playing at the stadium in summer and Mount Hawthorn Primary School being invited to have their sports carnivals here.
“The Vincent Tools ‘n’ Things Library is operating from the old Turnstile building and FAFC has welcomed a range of new organisations to use their Clubrooms, such as Transition Town Vincent. Things are really starting to happen in this co-sharing space.”

The works are in addition to a $741,000 joint-funded City of Vincent and Federal Government project to upgrade lighting at Britannia Reserve.
A design concept for the changerooms is being finalised with a report to be presented to Council for approval.
