At the recent Ordinary Council Meeting on September 14, Vincent Council approved the Robertson Park Development Plan, which will see a range of exciting additions at the much-loved park.
The key elements include more green space, introduction of netball and multi sports courts, a focus on Aboriginal heritage and increased fencing for safer dog exercise.
The Robertson Park Development Plan will be delivered over several years as funding becomes available, with Stage One including new multi-sport courts, upgrades to the existing tennis precinct and a new playground to be carried out over the next 2-3 years.
A $100,000 State election commitment grant from Hon. John Carey MLA, Member for Perth has been allocated for the multi sports courts and $80,000 has been budgeted this financial year for detailed design work.
Future elements such as additional shade, verandah extension on the tennis complex, community garden and dog park will be implemented following funding approval.
In May this year residents were invited to have their say on the draft Robertson Park Development plan, with a large majority of respondents (84.1%) throwing their support behind the project.
Community feedback was taken into consideration when adopting the Robertson Park Development Plan with key changes listed below;
- The relocation of the public toilet
- Improved lighting for greater safety at night
- Inclusion of a dual use tennis hit up wal
- Improved footpaths to allow for enhanced movement around the park
- Enhancing and opening the Tennis Centre entrance and boundaries
- Removing the proposed enclosed dog exercise area, and extending the current fence lines.
Mayor Emma Cole said increased density and a growing population contributed to parks and open spaces being in high demand across Vincent.
“We know there is a need to grow our parks and green space and improve the quality of facilities so that our community have the best opportunities for socialising outdoors, playing sport, exercising, relaxing and dog walking,” she said.
“Robertson Park is a beautiful meeting place for locals and an important sports hub for the tennis community. By reducing the large number of tennis courts we will bring in more green space and introduce a diverse range of sports, including our first netball courts in Vincent.
“The park is a place for all with a greater focus on Aboriginal heritage and wetlands history, a spot for a community garden, better lighting and pathway connections throughout and a safer area for off leash dog exercise.
“With improved lighting, our community can exercise, train and play at night and new acrylic hard courts will reduce ongoing maintenance costs, water use and extend use.
“I would like to thank the local community for their fantastic feedback throughout this process and thank the Friends of Robertson Park for taking on a strong advocacy role for the park that they cherish.”
The Robertson Park Development Plan includes;
- Four multi-sports courts
- Upgraded tennis court surfaces
- Improved park lighting
- Community garden
- New dog exercise area with retaining wall – which will serve as both a barrier and seat
- New public open space turf area
- Removal of existing playground and exercise equipment and replace with new nature playground and new outdoor equipment
- New public toilet facilities
- Upgrades to wetland heritage trial signage
