Located at the corner of Egina and Purslowe Streets in Mt Hawthorn, Menzies Park is used by the Mt Hawthorn Cardinals Junior Football Club, University Cricket Club and a range of casual sporting users.

It is a popular community space, with a fully fenced playground, barbecues and public toilets.

As a designated dog exercise area, the park is also a well-loved spot for local dog owners.

The City continues to deliver various improvements to the area, including better lighting, drainage and pavement.

NOW COMPLETE

Pavillion

The pavilion, which was built in the 20th century, was refurbished in 2022.

It is used by the Cardinals, University Cricket Club, community groups and bookings for events and meetings.

Improvements included a new kitchen and pantry, dry lined walls, upgraded bathroom fittings, LED lighting and polished floors.

Play equipment

In 2022, the City installed four adult exercise stations and calisthenics-style equipment with elements for people of all abilities.

The playground’s flooring was upgraded to softfall in 2024. The surface is more durable rubber that is UV resistant, non-toxic, non-allergenic and longer lasting.

Drainage

A stormwater storage and infiltration system was installed underground at the park in 2025 to help mitigate flooding in known hotspots including East Street, Sasse Avenue and Lynton Street.

The system will not only reduce our reliance on existing pipes and infrastructure but help to replenish our much-needed groundwater reserves.

The space-efficient structure can store approximately 300,000 litres of rainwater, which is gradually released back into the ground.

This approach supports environmental sustainability while addressing local drainage needs.

The project followed the success of similar works completed at Lynton Street Reserve in May 2024.

This was part of our work to improve the City’s drainage network to better prepare for and cope with increasing rainfall and the impacts of climate change.

Permeable verge paving

Permeable paving was rolled out around the park in 2025 to provide a more stable parking surface on the verge of Berryman Street, between Egina and East Streets.

The paving works in tandem with the underground stormwater storage and infiltration system to reduce the volume and speed of runoff during heavy rains, minimising erosion and flooding.

The permeable paving also allows rainwater to infiltrate the ground, ensuring the roots of the Liquidambar trees get plenty of water.

Floodlighting upgrade

The City heard from the community in 2024 that the old lights needed replacing, so people could feel safer when using the park after dark.

In 2026, new light poles were installed and turned on for the first time at the popular charity footy event, the Reclink Community Cup.

The upgraded lighting gives teams more flexibility with training times and the option to play at night.

In addition to the sports lighting, the project included community lighting to improve visibility and safety for people walking, exercising, visiting the playground or enjoying the park in the evening.

The project was funded by the City of Vincent and the WA Government through an election commitment from the Hon. John Carey MLA.

It is also part of the WA Government’s PlayOn WA initiative, which aims to deliver 2,030 community infrastructure items across WA by 2030.

WHAT'S NEXT

The City is planning to replace bollards around the park in 2026.
