Grow It Local

Grow It Local is a community initiative that encourages more people to grow, share and eat locally grown foods.

The City of Vincent proudly supports this initiative and are encouraging local growers to become members and join the movement.

Members will have access to workshops, online support and plenty of gardening knowledge. They can log on, see what’s growing locally, connect with experts and get inspired. 

For City of Vincent residents, the program is free to sign up. Members will have access to:

  • Online workshops and Q&As: monthly, digital, free for residents.
  • ‘How-to-grow’ podcasts and videos
  • Awards: The Grow it Local Awards in January/February
  • Expert advice: Available year-round, within 24 hrs.

The City of Vincent is offering free seeds to the first 200 residents who join Grow It Local and are not already members.

These first 200 residents will receive free easy-to-grow heirloom cherry tomato, basil genova and black beauty eggplant seeds delivered directly to their door.

To be eligible:

  • You need to be a new member of Grow It Local
  • Head to Free Seed Service and register.

This limited time offer is open from 1 - 21 October 2025 or until the offer is fully redeemed.

Who is it for? 

Grow It Local is for everyone! The program encourages the whole community to get involved. It’s for green thumbs and food growers, sustainability enthusiasts, new and small-scale gardeners, local businesses, schools, community gardens and local groups to connect, share skills, produce, space and more.

There are many reasons to get involved in Grow It Local.

How do I sign up? 

Simply head to the Grow It Local via growitlocal.com/free-seed-service and register. 

The free Spring seed offer is available to the first 200 residents who join Grow It Local and are not already members. Offer is open from 1 - 21 October 2025 or until the offer is fully redeemed. Seeds will be sent directly to these residents.

Once you are signed up, you can see who and what is growing locally, connect with local growers and food lovers, explore opportunities to join a local community garden or simply get some great tips about growing food locally.

When you are on the website, simply click on 'search' then explore the drop down categories to find local produce and foods, experiences and workshops, seeds and seedlings and products and services.

What does it cost? 

The program is free for residents to sign up and participate in.

Grow It Local members may choose to charge a fee for their skill or knowledge sharing services, produce or homemade products.

Why is the City involved? 

This program is part of our Enhanced Environment Strategy Action Plan and the revised Public Health Strategy, as it supports goals to reduce waste, encourage better eating, and supports the community to participate in the circular economy.

Can I grow veggies on my verge? 

The City recommends planting native plants on verges. Native plants are the most appropriate for verge gardens as when established, they can survive our hot, dry summers with little to no watering. For more information on verges, visit our Verge Maintenance page.

Do members need a garden to participate? 

No, you do not need a large backyard garden to participate in Grow It Local. The initiative encourages growing food in various spaces, including balconies, window sills, community gardens, and even pots on a small patch. Grow It Local is designed to support people with any level of gardening experience and offers resources like workshops and online support to help everyone participate.

Can community groups sign up a "resident"? 

Yes.This offer is available to residents, businesses, schools and community organisations.

Grow It Local Awards

The Grow It Local Awards are a celebration of the passion and creativity of the home food growing community.

All Australian food gardeners are eligible to enter.

  • Entries open January 2026 (official date TBA)

  • Entries close February 2026 (official date TBA)

  • Winners will be announced in February 2026
