Vincent Launches a Platform for Art

From 1 June the City of Vincent will create temporary art spaces for local creatives and artists to explore and show off their talents through an experimental community led art initiative called Platform Project.

“From June until October, we are calling on our arts community for creative ideas for temporary art pieces or projects in two open air locations or their own front yard. We want to see more art in the public realm and we’re encouraging artists to get involved and have some fun,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“We know there are many talented artists in Vincent, ranging from professionals to emerging artists and students. The Platform Project is not limited by age or experience and allows us to explore and celebrate the creativity we have right here in our community, welcoming full artistic freedom in any form such as visual art, textile, craft, sculpture, installation, performance, projection or found art. To encourage artists to take part, we will be awarding prizes for works that capture our imagination.”

The locations options for the Platform Project are areas within Axford Park, a stretch of footpath along William Street Northbridge or in your own front yard.

The idea came from members of the City’s Arts Advisory Group and is part of the Arts Development Action Plan that aims to encourage emerging creative artists in Vincent to share their skills with the community. The only limitations are that artworks should be minimally invasive, not offensive in nature and require little effort to install and remove. They are located in defined public areas so the City asks participants to be considerate of other people when planning their works and keep within the Platform Project areas.

The City also recommends that because these areas are public, not to install artworks that are very expensive or irreplaceable. This project is better suited to ephemeral public pieces. To be involved, add your art to one of the Platform Project locations, or your own front yard, between 1 June – 31 October.

Take a photo or video of your contribution and tag it on social media with #platformproject. Monthly spot prizes will be awarded and at the end of the project, one artist will be selected and commissioned by the City to create a permanent art installation.
