This year’s Councillor for the Day program has just wrapped up, giving Year 6 students from Aranmore, Mt Hawthorn, and North Perth Primary Schools a chance to experience how local government works.
Students took part in two mock council meetings. They followed an agenda, debated issues, and stepped into the shoes of the Mayor, CEO, Councillors, and officers.
Mayor Alison Xamon answered questions and talked about the role local government plays in shaping our community.
The program helps students develop skills in public speaking, teamwork and critical thinking. They leave with a stronger sense of how they can contribute to decisions in their community.
Part of the City’s Strategic Community Plan and Youth Action Plan, Councillor for the Day encourages civic engagement and youth contribution.
Schools interested in participating in 2026 are encouraged to contact the City of Vincent’s Community Development team.
