Message from Mayor Alison Xamon - June 2026

Kaya wanjoo (hello and welcome). I hope you are keeping dry during the current Noongar season, Makuru, known for being wet and cold.

Last month we hosted a variety of community and staff events for National Reconciliation Week that celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, and which were all led by First Nations people.

It was great to see everyone come together at these events which served as a reminder that Vincent has a role to play in advancing reconciliation and justice for First Nations people.

The Public Health Plan 2026–2031 is one example of long-term thinking in action. It recognises that the health of a community is shaped by mental wellbeing, social connection and the environment and will guide everything we do in the health, wellbeing and environment space.

We receive many requests from the community about speeding, traffic safety and congestion impacts on local streets. The draft Local Area Traffic Management Policy, which is currently open for public feedback, sets out how these requests are assessed and prioritised. You can now visit the City’s website to see whether your street has been assessed and where it sits in the priority list.

The Safe Trading Site in Leederville has officially opened, offering a safer and more convenient alternative for online buyers and sellers to meet and complete transactions with confidence.

The Library refurbishment has commenced and while the building is closed, library services remain available to support our community to keep reading and connecting throughout the refurbishment. [LW6]

We’ve started our annual tree planting season, which will see hundreds of trees being planted across our suburbs. If you would like a new verge tree, visit our website before 28 September to secure one for next year.

The end of the financial year is fast approaching and we’ve been planning our budget for next year.

Last month, we invited community feedback on our proposed Differential Rates and Minimum Payments, and there is still time to have your say. This helps ensure rates are applied across different property classifications in a fair and equitable way.

A new differential rating category is proposed for un-hosted short term rental accommodation at 20 per cent above residential rates.

A higher rate increase of 40.9 per cent will be applied to vacant residential properties. This I hope, will relieve some of the burden put on ratepayers from illegal dumping and anti-social behaviour that happens on these vacant properties.

We all want to feel safe in our neighbourhood, local parks and public spaces and at Vincent, we continue to work closely with WA Police, local services and homelessness and community partners to respond to issues across the City. Residents are urged to report antisocial and criminal behaviour to Police.

I encourage you to follow our Facebook and Instagram to learn more about what’s happening in your local neighbourhood.

Warm wishes,

Mayor Alison Xamon
