A Vincent local has swapped the stands for the sidelines, volunteering behind the scenes at Perth Rectangular Stadium (HBF Park) during the Women’s Asian Cup.
Shane La was one of the medical volunteers supporting game day operations at the stadium. Having previously volunteered at HBF Park and Optus Stadium, Shane said the chance to be part of another international sporting event was too good to miss.
“I wanted to see how everything works behind the scenes and be part of something big,” Shane said. “International sport has a different energy and it’s exciting to contribute.”
In the lead up to the event, Shane completed training, inductions and stadium walkthroughs before taking up his position on the sidelines.
“There is a lot more preparation than people realise,” he said. “The background checks and security processes were very thorough, but it shows how seriously player and spectator safety is taken.”
On game day, Shane’s assisted injured players from the field, putting him right in the middle of the action.
“That was definitely the highlight,” he said. “Helping an injured player during a live match was a great experience.”

City of Vincent Mayor Alison Xamon said volunteers play an important role in strengthening local communities.
“Volunteers like Shane reflect the strong sense of community that surrounds events in Vincent”
As a self-confessed soccer fan, Shane said the experience made him proud and keen to volunteer again.
“If another international soccer match comes to Perth, I would absolutely put my hand up again.” he said.
To recognise the contribution of Perth volunteers for the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup, a native Eucalyptus caesia tree has been planted at Litis Stadium which was used as a training base for one of the teams during the Perth matches.
The City of Vincent is proud to support major sporting events that celebrate volunteers and bring people together in the community.
