The City of Vincent has been recognised for its leadership and commitment to creating a more sustainable and safer community, taking home two categories at the 2026 National Awards for Local Government.
Vincent won the Environmental Sustainability Award for its GreenTrack initiative and the Road Safety Award for its Near Miss Pilot Program.
The National Awards for Local Government are the Australian Government's premier awards program, recognising projects that demonstrate innovation, leadership and excellence in local government service delivery across Australia.
Mayor Alison Xamon said the dual award win reflects Vincent's commitment to finding practical solutions to some of the most important challenges facing local communities.
“These awards recognise projects that are making a tangible difference in our community, whether that's helping residents build more sustainable homes or improving safety on our streets.
We're incredibly proud that two initiatives developed here in Vincent have been recognised on the national stage.
As communities across Australia seek practical ways to reduce emissions, build more resilient neighbourhoods and improve road safety, these programs demonstrate the important role local governments can play in delivering practical solutions that create lasting community benefit."
Leading the way in sustainable housing
The Environmental Sustainability Award recognises the City's GreenTrack initiative, which is making sustainable home design more accessible and helping homeowners reduce the environmental impact of new homes and renovations.
Launched in January 2024, GreenTrack is Australia's first local government-led sustainability incentive program for residential development. The initiative was created in response to a gap in State policy and growing community interest in more sustainable housing.
Through the program, homeowners can receive a free lifecycle assessment (LCA) of their proposed development, a complimentary consultation with a Green Design Advisor, subsidised assessment costs and priority assessment for eligible applications.
To support the initiative, the City partnered with sustainability specialists Cerclos to develop RapidLCA, a mobile-friendly lifecycle assessment tool that makes it faster, easier and more affordable for homeowners to understand and reduce the environmental footprint of their projects.
Since its introduction, GreenTrack has delivered impressive results.
- More than 60 homes trialled RapidLCA.
- Participating projects have achieved an average 70% reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions.
- More than 20,700 tonnes of carbon emissions have been avoided - the equivalent to planting 127,266 trees.
- Uptake in GreenTrack has increased with around 20% of eligible applications now opting into the program.
The success of GreenTrack highlights how voluntary incentives can encourage the adoption of environmentally sustainable design in residential development.
Using technology to improve road safety
The Road Safety Award recognises Vincent's Near Miss Pilot Program, an innovative initiative using artificial intelligence to identify dangerous traffic interactions before serious crashes occur.
The pilot was conducted at the intersection of Fitzgerald Street and Angove Street in North Perth, which was selected due to its history of vehicle crashes, including high-risk right-angle collisions.
Between February and April 2025, an AI-powered near miss camera analysed traffic movements at the intersection, providing valuable insights into driver behaviour and potential safety risks.
The findings revealed an average of 38 near misses each day.
The technology also identified 16 near misses involving vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
Vincent was the first local government in metropolitan Perth to participate in the initiative, which was funded by the WA Road Safety Commission and delivered in partnership with Australian technology company LAB3.
The data collected through the pilot is now helping inform future safety upgrades at the intersection, with the City working alongside Main Roads WA to investigate treatments that will improve safety outcomes for all road users.
The City of Vincent is proud to be recognised nationally for these achievements and remains committed to delivering initiatives that create a more liveable community.
