The City of Vincent has become the first local government in Australia to start CycleRAP assessments across its road network, helping improve safety for cyclists. 

The assessments will help the City better understand where cycle routes are safest, where risks are higher and where investment will make the greatest difference to everyday safety and comfort for people riding bikes. 

Delivered in partnership with Lane Patrol, the project uses data and AI tools to assess road conditions across the City. The CycleRAP method, developed by the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), is internationally recognised and provides a consistent way to measure cycling safety. 

The assessments consider factors such as traffic speed, road layout, intersections, lane conditions and how well cyclists are separated from vehicles. Each section of road is then given a safety rating, allowing higher-risk areas to be identified and prioritised. 

The results will help guide future upgrades to key cycling routes across Vincent and ensure decisions are based on clear evidence and real conditions on the ground. 

This work supports the City’s wider goals to encourage walking and cycling, reduce car dependence for short trips and create safer streets everyone who uses them. 

Findings from the assessment will feed into the City’s Bike Plan and future transport planning, helping make cycling a safer and more practical choice for everyday travel in Vincent
