The City of Vincent is taking an early look at how smart glasses and similar wearable technology can be used in public facilities, becoming the first local government in Western Australia to formally investigate the issue.

While smart glasses can have many legitimate uses, including accessibility and assistive functions, they can also record video, audio and images without it being obvious to people nearby.

As these devices become more common, the City wants to ensure community privacy remains protected. This is particularly important in locations where people may expect a higher level of privacy, such as recreation centres, libraries, community facilities, change rooms and public toilets.

Vincent will consider whether existing protections are sufficient. Under the Vincent Local Government Property Local Law 2021, it is already prohibited to use a mobile phone, camera or other recording device to take images or recordings of a person  at a community facility without their express consent.

The review will consider practical and enforceable options to help protect privacy while recognising the many legitimate uses of wearable technology. It will also look at approaches being adopted by other councils and will encourage the Federal Government to introduce stronger privacy protections to address emerging technologies. A report will be provided to Council in the coming months.

As technology continues to evolve, the City will take proactive steps to ensure its facilities remain welcoming, safe and respectful places for everyone.
