Trees ready to reach new heights as power goes underground

As underground power progresses in North Perth and Mt Hawthorn, our street trees will have the space to grow to their full potential.

Overhead powerlines limit how large many street trees can become. Regular pruning is needed to keep branches clear of powerlines, reducing shade and canopy.

With powerlines moving underground, that will no longer be the case.

This week, Western Power staff joined the City of Vincent’s Parks Team to plant 38 new trees along Hobart and Sydney streets in Mt Hawthorn, marking another milestone in the Underground Power Project.

The new trees include a mix of Western Australian species such as White Bottlebrush, Red Flowering Gum and Coral Gum. As they grow, they'll provide more shade, create habitat for birds and other wildlife, improve air quality and help keep our streets cooler during Perth's hot summers.

Planting more trees and growing Vincent's urban canopy is a key priority for the City. Larger trees mean cooler neighbourhoods, greener streets and more comfortable places for people to walk, ride and spend time outdoors.

The Underground Power Project is a once-in-a-generation partnership between Western Power, and the City of Vincent. Together, we're replacing overhead distribution powerlines with underground power to improve reliability, enhance our streets and help grow a greener city.

Works in the North Perth / Mt Hawthorn project area are progressing, with almost half of the old power poles now removed. This area is expected to be fully undergrounded by the end of the year, with the benefits set to be enjoyed for generations to come.
