Vincent residents are being encouraged to keep using their green-lid bin for food and garden waste as part of a state-wide transition to more consistent guidance for Food Organics, Garden Organics (FOGO) bins.
The updated guidelines aim to make waste sorting simpler, reduce contamination and produce cleaner, higher-quality compost that can be safely used in parks, gardens and agricultural land.
Only food organics, garden organics and approved FOGO kitchen caddy liners should be placed in the lime-green FOGO bin.
Additional items that could previously be placed in FOGO, including dog poo, food-soiled pizza boxes, tea bags and tissues, should now be placed in the red-lid general waste bin. Clean paper and cardboard packaging can go in the yellow-lid recycling bin.
FOGO is an important part of Vincent’s three-bin waste system, helping households divert food and garden waste from landfill and turn it into a valuable resource. Keeping these materials separate means more organic waste can be processed into high-quality compost, while recyclable materials can be recovered through the yellow-lid recycling bin. This helps reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and supports a more sustainable waste system for our community.
Vincent households are already doing a great job of sorting waste into the right bins, with our waste audits showing consistently low levels of contamination.
Over the coming months, the City will roll out an education campaign to help residents understand what goes in each bin and support correct sorting behaviours. The campaign will include clear information, resources and waste sorting tips to support households during this transition.
Residents may notice that older bin lid stickers, kitchen caddies or signage show different advice from newer materials or the City's website.
New bin stickers, signs and lids will be introduced as part of the ongoing rollout when they become available.
The City will continue to provide updates through its website and social media and encourages residents to check Recycle Right A-Z Guide or our website if unsure about a specific item.
