Smiles extended for safe drivers in Vincent

This month you could be greeted with a smile during your commute in Vincent.

Following a trial of ‘smiley face’ speed awareness signs along Ellesmere Street in Mt Hawthorn, four additional signs will now be used on rotation across various hotpot locations.

The first streets in Vincent to have the new temporary speed signs installed are Farmer Street in North Perth and Brittania Road in Mt Hawthorn.

Speed awareness signs are designed to encourage safer driving by displaying a vehicle’s speed as it passes. Drivers travelling within the limit will see a green smiling face, while those going over will see a reminder to slow down.

Similar initiatives have been shown to positively influence driver behaviour and help create safer, more pleasant streets.

The signs also collect traffic data such as average speeds and traffic volumes, which help us plan safer roads.

The trial in Mt Hawthorn was a result of community feedback and involved the installation of four temporary speed awareness signs along Ellesmere Street while Main Roads carried out construction on the Scarborough Beach Road and Green Street roundabout. Analysis of the data collected concluded that the signs were successful in encouraging safer driving.

The project is part of our Accessible City Strategy, which aims to prioritise pedestrians through safe streets, slower speed zones and shared spaces.
