From early November, general waste collected in red-lid bins across Vincent will be sent to Kwinana Energy Recovery instead of landfill at the Tamala Park Waste Facility.
There’s no change to the way you sort your waste at home. Your red, yellow and green-lid bins will continue to be used for the same items.
The move is an important step towards reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill. Kwinana Energy Recovery uses thermal treatment to turn leftover household waste into electricity and recover useful materials, including metals, that would otherwise be buried in landfill. The facility can generate enough electricity to power more than 55,000 homes each year.
The best thing we can do is keep valuable resources in use. A circular economy means materials are reused, repaired, recycled or composted so they stay useful for as long as possible. The red bin should only be used for the leftover waste that cannot be put to better use.
Food scraps and garden should continue to go in the green lid bin, while recyclable items such as paper, cardboard, glass, cans and hard plastic containers belong in the yellow lid bin.
By sorting waste correctly, we can recover more materials, make useful compost and reduce the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of. Energy recovery is an alternative to landfill for what's left over after these materials have been separated.
The City of Vincent is a member of Mindarie Regional Council (MRC), which manages general waste on behalf of its member local governments. The Cities of Stirling and Perth, and the Towns of Cambridge and Victoria Park, will also send their general waste to Kwinana Energy Recovery.
