Message from Mayor Alison Xamon - July 2026

Kaya wanjoo (hello and welcome). The wet and cold Noongar season of Makuru has well and truly arrived, making it the perfect time to explore the fantastic indoor events and workshops on offer this winter across Vincent.

It was great to see our community come together during NAIDOC Week to celebrate Indigenous culture, connection and strength. One of the highlights for me was experiencing acclaimed Bibbulmun Noongar actress and songwriter Della Rae Morrison share the beauty and power of Noongar language through song.

Keep reading to find out more about the first meeting of our Disability Access and Inclusion Advisory Group and how to have your say on some important projects including the updated Local Planning Strategy and North Perth, Highgate and Mt Lawley precinct transport studies.

I recently attended the first meeting of the Disability Access and Inclusion Advisory Group, which was a valuable opportunity to talk with, listen and learn from people with disability, parents and carers, support workers and advocacy groups who use and visit our facilities.

Their advice, perspectives and lived experience will play an important role as we begin consultation on our new Disability Access and Inclusion Plan. I look forward to sharing more as this important work progresses.

Earlier this year, we lowered speed limits on key arterial roads to 40km/h to help create safer, calmer streets for everyone. We are continuing this work through the North Perth, Highgate and Mt Lawley Precinct, Transport and study, which is now open for public feedback and invites the community to share their local knowledge about transport and traffic in these areas. You can visit Imagine Vincent to find out more and provide your feedback.

We are also inviting the community to have their say on the City’s updated Local Planning Strategy which sets out how Vincent will grow and change over the next 15 years. With the City required to plan for 11,490 new dwellings by 2050, the strategy will help ensure this growth is well managed, thoughtful and reflects the needs of our community.

The community response to the With CCTV cameras, lighting and clear signage, it’s a safer place for people buying and selling online to meet in person.

The Poppy Project is returning in 2026. Over the last two years, our community has handcrafted more than 3,500 poppies, creating a moving tribute outside the Vincent Administration Building to honour those who have served and those who have lost their lives in war. This year we want to see the whole of Vincent awash with poppies, head to the to learn how you can contribute this year.

Over the past several weeks, the library has undergone a significant refresh to create a more welcoming, accessible and enjoyable space for everyone. More than just a place to read, it is a vibrant community hub where people can connect, learn and create. Alongside the refreshed space, the team has launched an updated schedule of programs and services, providing more opportunities for learning and community connection. You can visit Vincent Library to learn more.

Vincent has been recognised nationally for its leadership and commitment to creating a more sustainable and safer community, taking home two wins at the 2026 National Awards for Local Government - the Environmental Sustainability Award for its GreenTrack initiative and the Road Safety Award for our Near Miss Pilot Program.

We are proud to see these two Vincent initiatives being recognised. As communities across Australia seek practical ways to reduce emissions, strengthen neighbourhood resilience and improve road safety, these programs show how local governments can deliver lasting community benefit.

To stay up to date with the latest projects, programs and initiatives happening across the City, I encourage you to follow us on Facebook and Instagram and subscribe to our e-newsletter.
