Kids Christmas Market at North Perth Common

This Sunday young entrepreneurs in Vincent are selling their wares at a Kids Christmas Market at North Perth Common from 8am – 11am. It is a market run by kids and for kids.

Over 40 stalls will fill the Common including homemade crafts, jewellery, second hand toys and clothes, yummy treats and two lemonade stands. Talented young buskers will also provide entertainment for shoppers.

To be involved kids had to submit an idea for a stall and work to get it up and running before the event. The ages of stallholders range between 6-16 years. The Vincent Youth Network will also be represented with a gift wrapping station by gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to Foyer Oxford, through Anglicare WA.

The idea for the Kids Christmas Market came from Nicole Brower who submitted the idea as a way to activate North Perth Common.

“My kids Eva and Luis love setting up stalls in front of our house and I’ve noticed some more kids trying to do the same, but with little success. I talked to some local mums and thought it would be a good idea to have a kids market.

“It is a great way for kids to clear out some space at home and encourages ethical shopping and reuse. The responsibility of putting together a stall, pricing goods and haggling also teaches some great life skills. Our stall will be pre-loved toys and clothes, manned by Luis, Eva, Violet and April, they are very excited about this weekend,” said Nicole.

Amelia and Zuriel aged 12 and 7 are regular stall holders at Perth arts markets. In 2015 Amelia had entered the Children's Book Council of Australia Make Your Own Story Book competition and won first prize in her category. They sell her original books and kids handmade products with proceeds going toward charities supporting disadvantaged children in third world countries.

Their father Ray was proud of his daughter’s efforts.

“Charities that they support are orphanages or shelters that they had visited throughout their travels to Cambodia, Fiji, and Nepal. They have raised over $2,500 since they started in December 2016."

“Their stall theme is Kids made products for fundraising - Kids helping kids. Not only does it encourage the spirit of giving, but it also nurtures the youngsters to give them a sense of entrepreneurship. For the upcoming Kids Christmas Market in North Perth, they have both been rehearsing a number of songs and made new origami Christmas cards to add to their products.”

Come down to the Kids Christmas Market this Sunday 8 December, from 8am -11am at North Perth Common. The first 50 people to the market will receive a free coffee from the Stomp Coffee van.
