Vincent’s upgraded sporting grounds have put us on the international stage this month.
HBF Park has hosted several Women’s Asian Cup games, with the Matildas set to play their quarter final match there tomorrow. Litis Stadium also stepped up as an official training base for one of the competing teams.
Litis’ impressive lighting upgrade, supported by local member Hon John Carey, alongside the new changerooms and clubroom renovations, have transformed it into a world class venue and it’s been terrific seeing it used by the international women’s teams.
The important upgrades mean Floreat Athena Football Club, which is celebrating 75 years this season, can meet the demand for more programs for women and girls.
Menzies Park and Birdwood Square are next in line to receive lighting upgrades that will improve safety and support the continuing growth of our local sports clubs.
Our commitment to community sport goes beyond lighting up our parks and reserves. In Vincent we have a lot of older buildings that need to be maintained, so support from the WA Government is vital. The Forrest Park Croquet Club has been a part of the Vincent community for over 100 years, and I was pleased to see the new kitchen Vincent delivered with support from Local Member Frank Paolino, last week.
The WA Government announced it would introduce the much-anticipated legislation needed to allow local governments to further limit the movement of cats.
While we have five cat prohibited areas in Vincent under our Animal Local Law, this does not prevent them from roaming around streets posing a risk to other cats and animals, particularly our precious bird life.
The new legislation will enable us to do more to encourage responsible pet ownership. Our goal is to ensure all animals in Vincent are safe and protected and that all pets are being treated equally and being under owner control at all times.
This year we have continued our sponsorship of the St Patrick’s Day WA celebrations, which is a fantastic free event that brings together people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy Irish culture and traditions. I hope you’ll join our glorious Irish community at Birdwood Square this Saturday 14 March.
Best wishes,
Mayor Alison Xamon
