Around 250 young Aboriginal athletes from around Western Australia are in Vincent for the Kambarang Sport & Cultural Showcase from 27 November – 1 December to celebrate sport and Aboriginal culture.

The showcase focuses on two sports; AFL and basketball and provides an opportunity for Aboriginal teens from around WA to play a sport they love with local Vincent youth.

The Kambarang Sport and Cultural Showcase is a City of Vincent initiative to empower Aboriginal teens aged 14 -18, create meaningful experiences and work with local organisations to create opportunities and build capacity in the local community. This initiative is part of Vincent’s work towards reconciliation and an action from the City’s Reconciliation Action Plan.

“We warmly welcome so many young people into Vincent for the Kambarang Sport and Cultural Showcase, with many of the youth attending having demonstrated excellence in their sport and in their local communities,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“We will no doubt have some future sports stars attending and it is a pleasure for part of their journey to be here in Vincent. I am especially excited that women in sport are represented with the 3x3 women’s basketball competition and the fact that 65 young Aboriginal female football players will be playing.”

“Members of the public are invited to come watch the basketball carnival from 10am on Saturday 30 November and the AFL carnival from 10am on Sunday 1 December, which will include an All Star AFL game against former players,” she said.

The football carnival will include four games between local Aboriginal youth and students from the Kimberley and the Pilbara, with an All Star Game featuring former professional AFL players Des Headland & Tendai Mzungu as well as some other special guests.

The basketball tournament will be at Loftus Recreation Centre featuring 16 teams playing across four divisions/ age groups.

Youth attending the showcase include local students as well as teens from Derby, Karratha, Geraldton, Hedland, the Kimberley and the Pilbara.

The teens participating will tour the West Coast Eagles headquarters, Dockers headquarters and the Perth Wildcats. They will also take part in a virtual reality workshop and boomerang workshop with local Noongar representatives.

The Kambarang Sport and Cultural Showcase is proudly supported by the City of Vincent, Loftus Recreation Centre, Subiaco Football Club, Matchworks, Spartan First and Thrifty WA.
