Come together for Porch Placemaking Week

Porches, balconies, front yards and driveways have become a saving grace for many people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They have been the places we have gone to for fresh air, where we found parcels that brightened our days and where we stood to commemorate Anzac Day.

With physical distancing still an essential part of life, we are being encouraged to activate our front porches and connect with our neighbours as part of Global Porch Placemaking Week.

Porch Placemaking Week encourages people to host simple activities on their porch, balcony, front yard, stoop or driveway between 30 May and 5 June.

Community members can organise anything from musical performances on the balcony to yoga on the front lawn, planting sessions on the verge or activities for kids on the driveway.

“We have seen some beautiful examples of the way people have managed to stay connected with their neighbours during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“There have been rainbows on fences, teddy bears in windows and driveways filled with chalk drawings.

“Porch Placemaking Week is another chance to bring people together and activate our streets in a fun and safe way at a time when we still can not have huge gatherings.

“Simple activities like mini concerts in the front yard or driveway dinners with neighbours can have a huge impact on your sense of community.

“We are proudly teaming up with Town Team Movement to promote this initiative within our community.”

Vincent residents who want to take part in Porch Placemaking Week can add their planned activities to a world map at porchplacemaking.com

On the event day, be sure to take loads of photos and tag @cityofvincent, @townteammovement and @porchplacemaking on Facebook. If you’re using Instagram, use the hashtag #porchplacemaking and tag @townteammovement.

You can get inspiration and see your porch on the Global Porch Placemaking social wall at walls.io/porchplacemaking

“We’re proud to connect local Town Teams and communities to global movements that demonstrate community-led activation,” said Town Team Builder Kylie Elsegood-Smith

“In this period of isolation, it is more important that communities come together to take action in their local neighborhoods and have a bit of fun.”
