Building the heart of North Perth

Construction of North Perth Common, the new heart of North Perth Town Centre, begins Monday, 21 January.

“North Perth Common will be an iconic meeting place at the corner of Fitzgerald and View streets. With more trees, seating, a dramatic artwork and space to hold events, it will bring people to North Perth and give a great boost to our local businesses,” said City of Vincent Mayor Emma Cole.

North Perth Common is the City of Vincent's flagship open space project for 2019. The total budget for the project is $741,000, which includes a $250,000 contribution from the WA State Government.

“Designing North Perth Common was a highly collaborative project. Our North Perth community told us what they wanted - a shaded place to sit and meet, a welcoming space to host events, to be inspired by public art, lighting at night and a focus on people not cars. We believe the North Perth Common will deliver all of this and more.”

“North Perth Common is unique in that art is central to its design. A striking circular lighting installation will feature overhead, and provide light to the area and project images and video into the space after dark. This circular design is carried throughout the space,” said Mayor Cole.

“Art is also included in the furniture, with 70 beautiful tiles of local flora and fauna created by the year 6 students of North Perth Primary School to feature on the inbuilt seating.”

“Our community told us they wanted more shade. 14 additional trees will be planted, delivering 40% more tree canopy coverage in the Common once the trees mature.”

“The Common will be a slow speed, shared space environment with a strong focus on pedestrian use. While cars will continue to use the space, a raised area will make this a space for all to enjoy,” she said.

The design for North Perth Common was developed by Emerge Associates with help from the North Perth Common Working Group which included Mayor Emma Cole, Councillor Josh Topelberg, John Carey MLA, Ida Smithwick (North Perth Local), Andrew Ryan (North Perth Local) and Munira Mackay (City’s Design Review Panel). BOS Civil has been appointed as the lead contractor for the construction of the project.

Until May, a short stretch of View Street will be closed to traffic to allow for the construction to be finished as quickly as possible. There will be no vehicle access from the corner of View Street carpark to Fitzgerald Street, however there will still be pedestrian access. The recent connection of the View Street and Rosemount carparks will also assist with access during construction.

North Perth Common is one part of a broader concept to develop access through View Street carpark to Angove Street and link the two parts of the North Perth town centre together.

“Our aim with North Perth Common is to create a new heart for the North Perth town centre – a meeting place that is iconic, flexible, inclusive and fun,” said Mayor Cole.
