The City of Vincent has acknowledged 80 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with the planting of a Pink Marri tree and the installation of a plaque outside the Administration and Civic Centre.
Mayor Alison Xamon said the event was an important opportunity to reflect on the devastation caused by nuclear warfare and to reinforce the City’s commitment to peace.
“As a member of Mayors for Peace, Vincent joins with cities around the world in recognising this anniversary and in calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons,” Mayor Xamon said.
“The horrors of war leave scars for generations. This tree will serve as a reminder of the consequences of such conflict and the responsibility we share to work towards peace.”
The Pink Marri is a magnificent tree, chosen for its significance as a native species and its striking beauty. It will contribute to the City’s ongoing efforts to increase urban canopy and support native wildlife.
The Mayors for Peace initiative was founded by the Mayor of Hiroshima and now includes more than 8,000 member cities across 166 countries and regions.
The City of Vincent is proud to be part of this global movement.
