Mt Hawthorn Precinct Transport Study

Find out what the City is doing to improve road safety and manage traffic in the Mt Hawthorn precinct.

Improving road safety in Mt Hawthorn

The City of Vincent is developing a five-year Road Safety Implementation Plan for the Mt Hawthorn precinct. This plan will guide the design and delivery of permanent road safety improvements across the precinct, with a focus on Ellesmere Street and surrounding local roads.

The plan will:

  • Identify opportunities to slow traffic and improve safety for all road users
  • Improve the pedestrian environment and strengthen cycling connections
  • Develop a coordinated approach to traffic calming across local streets
  • Consider the transport impacts of future growth around the Mt Hawthorn activity centre.

How this study came about

Community petitions received in December 23 and March 2025 raised concerns about increased traffic volumes, speeds and safety on Ellesmere Street and surrounding streets.

In July 2024, the City was unsuccessful in securing Blackspot funding for upgrades at the Ellesmere Street and Eton Street intersection. The City is continuing to work with Main Roads WA to pursue funding for improvements at this location, with a new Blackspot application being prepared.

In the meantime, low-cost traffic calming measures have been introduced, including electronic speed awareness signs along the full length of Ellesmere Street from Scarborough Beach Road to Charles Street. These actions, alongside ongoing planning, are informing the development of the five-year Road Safety Implementation Plan for the precinct.
