February marks the beginning of a busy and vibrant season of cultural celebrations and events across Vincent, where the inner city comes to life!
For the second year running, the East Perth Power Station has been transformed into a festival hub bringing international and local artists to the banks of the Derbarl Yerrigan.
Casa Musica offers free live music in a relaxed, family friendly setting. As the sun goes down, Boorloo Contemporary transforms the building with powerful works by First Nations artists.
At Vincent we love supporting events that celebrate creativity, strengthen community connection and bring our public spaces to life. I encourage community groups, creatives and event organisers to apply for our Event Sponsorship Program before it closes on 13 March.
One of the reasons Vincent has been rated WA’s Most Liveable City is because of our rich tapestry of people and cultures, and the connections we make through shared celebration.
This is why I’m looking forward to our upcoming Festival of Culture on 21 March. We intentionally chose to hold the event on Harmony Day because it will bring together people from different backgrounds to celebrate the diversity of our community through food, music and dance.
Another celebration I look forward to is Lunar New Year. I love the cultural performances and delicious food that are part of the festivities. We are fortunate to have so many amazing Asian restaurants in Vincent. One example is the new Vietnamese restaurant North 54 in Leederville, where I recently spoke with owner Bac to find out about what the celebration means to him and his family.
Alongside these celebrations, the City is undertaking important work to improve the safety and amenity of our neighbourhoods. Local roads are meant to be safe, calm spaces for residents – not shortcuts for outside traffic trying to cut corners.
We have almost completed precinct‑wide traffic studies to inform how we can best protect local streets, discourage rat‑running and ensure our roads can better safely support walkability and alternative forms of transport - after all, these are streets originally designed for horses, not multiple cars!
The first precincts being studied are Highgate, Mt Lawley and North Perth. Mt Hawthorn, Leederville and Perth precincts will follow.
Precinct traffic management improves neighbourhood safety and liveability. Easing congestion on major roads requires ongoing coordination with the State Government who also have an important part to play.
Tuesday 17 February is Random Acts of Kindness Day, an opportunity to spread small moments of kindness throughout Vincent. You could check on an elderly neighbour, drop a surprise note in a library book, or simply do something nice for someone else. Looking for meaningful ways to make kindness the norm spreads positivity and strengthens our bond as a community.
We should also extend our kindness to the creatures living among us. The interest in our 24/7 livestream of our Bird Watering Station following my ABC Radio interview with Christine Layton shows just how much you cherish our local wildlife. Leaving out fresh water and keeping your cats contained to your property (like our dogs) will ensure our native birds, lizards and frogs continue to flourish for generations to come.
During this Noongar season of Bunuru I hope you’ll join us in celebrating our diverse community, supporting local events and helping shape a safer, more connected City for everyone.
Best wishes,
Mayor Alison Xamon
