New playgrounds, upgrades at Litis Stadium, and the Leederville Place Plan

Kaya Wanjoo (hello and welcome). We are now in the middle of the Noongar season Djilba, which is considered a transitional time of the year, and the City has been busy preparing for the warmer Kambarang season.

We have experienced historic levels of rainfall this winter and this meant a slower start on the Hyde Park islands restoration project. While we wait for water levels to recede on the western island, we are focused on planting native wetland species to restore dense understory growth on the smaller eastern island. Advanced trees are also being planted to help our canopy recover more quickly.

With warmer weather approaching, we announced the opening of our annual Greening Vincent Gardening Competition. The competition is open to residents, schools and businesses and there are multiple categories including best front and back garden and best verge.

This year we have introduced a new category of ‘Best Catio’. By sharing our communities’ innovative enclosed outdoor areas, we hope to inspire others to protect native wildlife by keeping their cats at home.

We have continued to roll out our playground upgrades and this month I was delighted to see our youngest residents explore Vincent’s three newly finished playgrounds.

Edinboro Street Reserve in Mt Hawthorn, Beatty Park Reserve and Hyde Park East in North Perth have all undergone major refurbishments and offer a range of equipment that cater to toddlers, older thrill seekers and children with disability.

Brigatti Gardens, Britannia Road Reserve South and Hyde Street Reserve are next in line for upgrades, with concept designing underway.

It was terrific to open the new change rooms at Litis Stadium. They look superb and will greatly enhance the game day experience. Well done to Floreat Athena Football Club for their advocacy and thank you to the Federal Government for their partnership in providing modern amenities for the stars of the future.

At the Council meeting on 12 August, the draft place plan for the Leederville town centre was approved to be advertised for consultation.

Part of the plan is to re-direct traffic away from Oxford St and turn it into a pedestrian-friendly hub on weekends.

If you haven’t already, make sure you have your say. Your feedback will help us create an even better inner-city destination.

Best wishes,

Mayor Alison Xamon
