The ongoing high cost of fuel is affecting us all. Unfortunately for Vincent this means we are now looking at potential delays in the delivery of some of our infrastructure projects.
Like other councils, we’re developing our 2026/27 budget in a period of economic uncertainty and escalating costs. Careful planning around our resources will be imperative as we finalise the budget.
While the war in the Middle East continues to be top of mind, I’d like to direct our thoughts to what’s happening here. May marks National Reconciliation Week - a time to reflect on our shared history, learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and achievements, and explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The weight of reconciliation has been carried by First Nations people for too long, so this year’s theme ‘All In’ is asking us all to take action to make change.
We’ve organised a free screening of ‘Genocide in the Wildflower State’ at Luna Cinemas on 2 June. The documentary offers a deeply moving exploration into Western Australia’s Stolen Generations and following the screening you will hear from two Survivors as they share their reflections on healing and justice.
We are continuing to advocate for additional funding from the State Government to help us manage the impacts of Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB). Local governments have an important role to play, but we can’t be expected to carry the cost and responsibility alone.
Creating safe streets for everyone has long been a priority for Vincent, and with more people choosing to walk or cycle in and around the City, we are introducing slower speeds on more of our roads. This month the speed limit on Lord Street will be reduced to 50km/h. Vincent Street in Mt Lawley and Brisbane Street in Perth will both be reduced to 40km/h. We continue to advocate for the slowing of more distributor roads.
I am excited to announce that we are refurbishing the library to improve its layout, comfort and usability to meet the different needs of our community. The library will be closed from the end of the month until early July so the work can be carried out safely. Loan limits have been increased so you can still borrow what you need before the closure and you'll be able to keep them until the library reopens.
Stay on top off all the great things happening across Vincent by following us on Facebook and Instagram. We regularly post about our projects, consultations, events and other important information about our services.
Warm wishes,
Mayor Alison Xamon
