Menzies Park Drainage Project

Works to improve drainage at Menzies Park and surrounding streets in Mt Hawthorn are now complete.

A stormwater storage and infiltration system has been installed underground at the park to help mitigate flooding in known hotspots including East Street, Sasse Avenue and Lynton Street.

The project follows the success of similar works completed at Lynton Street Reserve in May 2024. It is part of our work to improve Vincent’s drainage network to better prepare for and cope with increasing rainfall and the impacts of climate change.

Sustainable water reuse

The new system at Menzies Park will not only reduce our reliance on existing pipes and infrastructure but help to replenish our much-needed groundwater reserves.

The space-efficient structure can store approximately 300,000 litres of rainwater, which is gradually released back into the ground. This approach supports environmental sustainability while addressing local drainage needs.

Permeable paving

We recently finished installing permeable paving to provide a more stable parking surface on the verge of Berryman Street, between Egina and East Street.

The paving will work in tandem with park's underground stormwater storage and infiltration system to reduce the volume and speed of runoff during heavy rains, minimising erosion and flooding.

The permeable paving also allows rainwater to infiltrate the ground, ensuring the roots of the Liquidambar trees get plenty of water.
