WARNDOOLIER
Warndoolier is a place of natural beauty and Aboriginal cultural significance.
Previously known as Banks Reserve, it covers approximately 3.5 hectares of Swan River foreshore in Mt Lawley.
The Banks Reserve Master Plan was adopted in 2019 and includes improvements to play spaces and active recreation, accessibility, environmental outcomes and community facilities.
The City of Vincent received approval from Landgate to rename Banks Reserve in November 2024 following extensive consultation with Traditional Owners, Aboriginal Elders, the Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group and Aboriginal organisations.
Improvements now completed
- lighting upgrade on the shared path
- eco-zoning adjacent to the shared path
- upgrades to the car park on Summers Street
- construction of the ‘Active Zone’ and nature playground
- pavilion demolition
- new picnic shelters, public toilets and landscaping
- new footbridge - Walter's Brook crossing
- Moorditj Footprints Audio Trail
- River Journeys Interpretation Node
- renaming from Banks Reserve to Warndoolier
Moorditj Footprints Audio Trail
Nestled within the landscape, the is scannable signage that shares stories and memories experienced by those who lived in East Perth during the 1950s-1970s. The trail starts at the River Journeys Interpretation Node and runs along the main footpath within Warndoolier.
River Journeys Interpretation Node
Visitors to Warndoolier can enjoy a peaceful space along the river with the completion of the River Journeys Interpretation Node.
Designed to honour the land and its history, the new space offers somewhere to rest, learn and connect with the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River). It features a unique timber design with seating, artwork and panels that showcase history and Whadjuk Aboriginal cultural stories.
This project was a collaboration between the City of Vincent and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA).
New footbridge - Walter's Brook crossing
A new footbridge was built to provide direct access to and from the playground, car park and toilets. Constructed from steel and timber, the bridge was designed to blend with the natural surroundings.
New footpaths have also been built to further improve connections.
