waste and Recycling Update

Vincent Council have expanded their recycling services in the City, so you are now able to recycle much more!

Recycling is very important for an inner-city Council like ours – our landfill sites have a limited life span, so we need to divert as much recyclable material as possible from them. Our waste removal costs will increase dramatically if we have to transport waste further away – but more importantly, we should all strive to reuse and recycle as much as we can to reduce our impact on our precious environment and its natural resources.

Recent key changes

  1. Vincent is now recycling all plastic containers with numbers 1-7 in the yellow top Mobile Recycling Bin. This includes pesky shopping bags (like supermarket and department store bags). Please also refer to the handy table below as a guide. Try to cut down on using plastic bags by taking your own reusable bags. Some stores offer cardboard boxes to take your shopping home.
  2. On demand collection of mattresses for recycling – call us and  we’ll pick it up for a $10 fee, for more information contact Waste Minimisation on 9273 6543 or mail@vincent.wa.gov.au.
  3. During the annual General Junk Only Bulk Verge Collection, please separate any mattresses, eWaste and scrap metal - so we can pick them up easily for recycling.

Need to get rid of an old mattress before your next scheduled Bulk Verge Collection?

Call the City's Waste Management Department to arrange collection and recycling for only $10. Mattresses are one of the most common items put out during Council verge collections. The average mattress consumes 0.75m³ of space in landfill and contains approximately 12.5kg of steel, 2kg of wood and 1.5 kg of foam. Why bury materials that have value?

Please separate all e-waste, mattresses and scrap metal during the City's annual Bulk Verge collection.

E-waste (TVs, computers, monitors, etc) is produced at up to three times that of normal household waste production. It can contain toxic materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium that are hazardous and potentially damaging to the environment. Be sure to separate your old tv’s and computers at your next scheduled Bulk Verge Collection to ensure it's recycled. You can also take any E-waste you need to dispose of to Balcatta Recycling Centre.

The City' s Bulk Verge Collection is held annually in February/March. Please separate e-Waste, mattresses and scrap metal (eg: whitegoods) - so these can be easily accessed and picked up by our crew for recycling - it's a different truck from the rest of the junk. The less that goes to landfill the better! Please also note that putting bulk waste out early is a littering offence. Contact the City's Ranger Services if you spot someone doing the wrong thing on 9273 6543 - or use our 'Report It' online form here
