Underground power coming to Vincent

Published on Wednesday, 14 December 2022 at 11:05:00 AM

The City of Vincent will reap the benefits of underground power across all our residential streets and town centres by the end of 2028*.

Vincent and Western Power have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for five project areas that will see overhead distribution lines removed across Vincent.

Western Power, the State Government and Vincent have committed to converting distribution powerlines to underground power, delivering reliable and safe power while improving street appeal and allowing the tree canopy to flourish.

Council’s vision in its 10-year Strategic Community Plan is for the City of Vincent to be a leafy and vibrant 24-hour city synonymous with quality design and sustainability.

Undergrounding power will help achieve this vision quicker than any other single project in our history.

The five new project areas will see over 10,000 properties with underground power in Leederville, Mt Hawthorn, West Perth, and North Perth.

Underground power delivers reliable and safe power while improving street appeal and allowing the tree canopy to flourish.

In May 2022, Council signed an MOU for its first three project areas in North Perth/Mt Lawley, North Perth/Mt Hawthorn and Perth/Highgate.

Combined with existing undergrounded areas and these three areas, the additional five projects will complete the undergrounding of distribution lines in all residential areas and town centres within Vincent.

“We are excited to bring underground power benefits to Vincent,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“This is the most affordable option for underground power that has been offered to the City and property owners.

“Our dream of flourishing tree canopies is being brought to life thanks to this once-in-a-generation opportunity.

“Many residents have told us that their streets are too dark at night.

“Through the ongoing underground power rollout throughout Vincent, streetlights will be replaced with bright energy-efficient LED lights so that our community can safely walk and exercise in their neighbourhoods in the evenings.”

Benefits of underground power include improved public safety, reliability and security, increased property value, reduced street tree pruning, lower life-cycle costs and improved opportunity for emerging technologies.
