City of Vincent calls for government support on asbestos safety

This National Asbestos Awareness Month, the City of Vincent is calling on State and Federal Governments to provide dedicated funding, practical guidance and genuine consultation with councils to make the Asbestos National Strategic Plan 2024 - 30 achievable on the ground.

Local governments are on the frontline when it comes to protecting residents from asbestos through local laws, building regulations and environmental health functions. While the City supports the Plan’s phased approach to preventing exposure to asbestos fibres to eliminate asbestos-related diseases across Australia, it is concerned about the absence of Federal or State funding for implementation.

“As it stands, the Asbestos National Strategic Plan potentially places a huge burden on all local governments,” said Mayor Alison Xamon.

“Everyone deserves to live in a safe and healthy home. We are ready to work in partnership with State and Federal agencies, industry and the community to deliver the Plan’s goals at the local level. But this cannot happen without practical support and resources.

“Collaboration and funding are essential if we want real outcomes that keep residents safe."

The City of Vincent is also reminding residents that many homes and buildings in Vincent, particularly those built before 1990, may contain asbestos materials such as cement sheeting in walls, ceilings, eaves, sheds, fences and roofs.

Asbestos in good condition generally poses little risk, but it can become hazardous if damaged or disturbed. Renovations and maintenance work are key times when asbestos may be exposed, making awareness and proper precautions essential.

By taking the right precautions, residents can reduce risks while helping the City contribute to the national goal of eliminating asbestos-related disease.

Resident safety tips:

  • Know where asbestos could be in your home. If in doubt, assume materials may contain asbestos and have them professionally tested before renovating.
  • Plan ahead to prevent disturbing and releasing asbestos fibres, especially when renovating or undertaking maintenance.
  • Engage a licensed asbestos removalist when undertaking home renovations or demolitions where asbestos might be present.
